In May 1966, the German-Israeli Association is founded by committed representatives of political parties, churches and unions. Since Gerhard Jahn was named its first president, the Association perceives itself as ”the Federal Republic of Germany’s central organization for friends of Israel to engage in cross-party cooperation in order to work in solidarity with the Sate of Israel and its population.“ During the Six-Day War in June 1967, the donation campaign ”Help for Israel“ raises the Association’s profile not only in Germany, but also in Israel. Four years later, in April 1971, the ”Israeli-German Association“ is founded in Tel Aviv; its first president is André de Vries, Rector of the University of Tel Aviv.

With 50 regional groups and – having taken on members of the newly formed ”GDR-Israel Association“ after 1990 – more than 5,000 members, the German-Israeli Association is today the largest bilateral association of friendship in Germany. This friendship is supported by the work of the regional groups and a nationwide Youth Forum via lectures, seminars, exhibitions, concerts and study trips.
